Feeling lonely? Gentle ways to feel less alone

8 October 2026 · Hasty

The short answer: loneliness is common and it isn’t a personal failing. Small, regular contact helps most: one message, one walk with someone, one letter. If you’re struggling, talk to someone today. You don’t have to wait until it’s worse.

If you’re in crisis, please reach out now. In the US, call or text 988. Elsewhere, find a free, confidential helpline at findahelpline.com.

You’re far from alone in feeling alone

The World Health Organization estimates that 1 in 6 people worldwide is affected by loneliness (2025). In the US, 20% of adults felt lonely “a lot of the day yesterday” (Gallup, 2024). People often call it a loneliness epidemic; it affects every age, and men often find it hardest to talk about.

Why you can feel lonely around people

Loneliness is about connection, not company. You can be busy, online all day and surrounded by people, and still feel that nobody really knows you. One-sided friendships, being ghosted by a friend, or friends drifting after a move all add to it.

Small things that help

  • Reach out to one person this week, even briefly.
  • Go somewhere regularly where the same people are.
  • Do something kind for someone; it connects both ways.
  • Write a letter: to a friend, a relative, or a pen pal.
  • Be gentle with yourself about how long it takes.

Online friends and long-distance friends

Internet friends are real friends. Long-distance friendships work best with a rhythm: a weekly message, a monthly call, a letter that takes its time.

Where Hasty fits

Hasty won’t fix loneliness, and isn’t a substitute for support. It’s a calm way to write to people, letters that take the real distance to arrive, with no feed and nothing to perform, if writing is something that helps you.

Letters that take the long way

Hasty is a slow, calm pen pal app for adults, coming soon to Android. Be the first to write.
