HastyWhat is snail mail? Happy mail, mail art and why letters are back
8 October 2026 · Hasty
The short answer: “snail mail” means letters sent by post rather than email or messages, named for how slowly they travel. It’s having a revival: people send happy mail, decorate envelopes, and write to pen pals because waiting for a letter is a pleasure of its own.
Snail mail meaning
The phrase appeared once email made post look slow. It was a joke at first, then a badge of honour: snail mail is the letter someone took time over.
Happy mail and mail art
- Happy mail is post sent just to make someone smile: a letter, a sticker, a pressed flower, a postcard.
- Mail art and envelope art turn the envelope itself into the gift: drawings, collage, washi tape, hand lettering around the address.
Letters are coming back
Pinterest’s 2026 trend report named pen pals a trend, with searches for “pen pal letters” up 35% and “handwritten letters” up 45%. Days like National Handwriting Day (23 January) and World Post Day (9 October) are good excuses to start.
How long does a letter take to arrive?
Within one country, usually a few days. Internationally, from about a week to several weeks, depending on the countries and the service. To send a letter internationally, write the destination country in capitals on the last line of the address, and buy an international stamp.
Snail mail, on your phone
Hasty keeps the best part of snail mail, the waiting, without the post office: letters take the real distance between your cities to arrive (never more than two days), you never need to share your address, and stamps and postcards arrive with them.
Letters that take the long way
Hasty is a slow, calm pen pal app for adults, coming soon to Android. Be the first to write.
